After reviewing several options to create a premium community, we’re thrilled to finally launch The Compounding Tortoise on Discord. It’s been a great journey so far, and we’re trying our best to further enhance overall service quality.
Our fellow premium member Srinidhi reached out to us, and his thoughts are spot-on: there’s much more to cover outside of the Substack and it shouldn’t be one-way street: let’s interact with each other much more and more frequently!
While we don’t manage an equity fund, we view our premium members as our partners. We’re all in this together and we’re extremely grateful for getting the opportunity to learn from each other.
As Francis Bacon once said: "Scientia potentia est". Creating a true community is/was definitely high on our list: it’s been an integral part of our long-term strategy in taking our Substack to the next level.
Our commitment has always been clear: keeping the daily cost for an annual premium member well below the symbolic 1 USD threshold. And let’s be clear: we will never hike our annual prices. Rather, we believe very much in economies of scale as growing our community leads to many more benefits.
As we continue to grow the CT family, we’ll be looking for interactive communication tools outside of Substack (e.g. Slack, we’ll see if we can try out Substack’s premium chat feature). Again, all while keeping the prices unchanged.
And here we are. We’ve now published over 90 posts, webinars, deep dives… on quality growth investing, common-sense valuation methods, and our portfolio strategy.
What new will the Discord bring to the table?
We’re living in a challenging world. Our quality growth companies will face periods of severe underperformance; the opposite holds true as well: there will be periods of strong above-average performance. Knowledge-sharing through Discord should help us calm our nerves, stay the course, and stay humble (don’t overreact to highly positive news or incredible short-term returns).
To avoid a complete information overload on the Substack (and to make sure our premium members’ highly precious reading time is spent effectively), we’re able to structure certain topics and information on our portfolio companies more effectively. We can also track and share the M&A news flow for our serial acquirers, without overloading our Substack. This way, you’ll stay up-to-date about all relevant news.
It’s easier to address specific questions (e.g. what’s NOPAT, what happens to IRR if X and/or Y change(s)?) and we’ve seen an increased level of interaction with our members via e-mail and Substack, but we can and should structure Q&A better.
Discussion of topics that are adjacent to our overall portfolio strategy. Everyday, we spend several hours reading research papers (e.g. on factor investing), industry write-ups, and other pieces to strengthen our portfolio strategy. We can exchange our views on dividend growth investing, behavioral finance and much more.
Maximizing transparency and building a track record: investing is a continuous learning process. Our Substack and Discord register every piece of information we’ve put out. That’s how you build credibility, track record, and foremost develop critical thinking.
Opportunity to extend our investable universe beyond the names we currently hold in the portfolio. For instance, we can add concise fundamental cheat sheets on several serial acquirers, owner-operator small caps or companies that haven’t made it to the portfolio so far (but are high-quality growth compounders nonetheless).
Sharing information on annual general meetings, investor days, broker conferences (especially valuable in case of smaller-sized companies).
Getting to know each other better! That’s how longline friendships are very likely to be created. We now have premium members from all over. Growing our community leads to continuity and new insights (on finance and life in general). Put another way, compounding is much more than building wealth in the stock market. As we wrote at the beginning of the year:
In the world of investing and entrepreneurship, we regularly remind ourselves of the following: “panta rhei”. This is a Greek phrase to state that everything flows/changes/evolves, which was popularized by the intriguing pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus. In secondary school, studying Ancient History helped me better understand the aspects of life, our culture and human behavior such as hubris. And while this substack is focused primarily on compounding wealth in the stock market, a “Compounding Tortoise” is someone who enjoys steadily accumulating not only financial wealth but also wisdom, happiness, joy, love, friendships and much more.
In short, we’re very excited about this new feature. You can upgrade through the following tab.
Thank you for your continued support and let’s grow our community and portfolios together! 🐢🐢🐢
Long-awaited, wonderful to see this launch! Looking forward to more learning and bonding! Thanks for the @mention! :)
